About Programme

About The Programme

In parallel to the rising demand for eyeglasses as a result of developing society level, new retail companies have been  established and wholesale of eyeglasses  and frames increased within the sector which is fully oriented towards import. Reform and development at all points within the sector have started since 1980s and a significant grade was reached through the efforts of carrying all segments of the sector as from production, retail and laboratory working level to the level of developed countries. For this reason, in parallel to the developments in the world, the first opticianry program in Western Black Sea region has been established in Bartın under the name of Health Services Vocational  School of Bartin University. 

Purpose of Department

The purpose of Opticianry programme is to train eye care staff who can make every aspect of ophthalmic dispensing from basic terminology to frame selection to eyewear fitting, adjusting and repairing. Optician Program's mission is to give our students the knowledge and skills to the professional area, effectively to use information and to solve problems that can query and creative qualities, team worker, self-renew, ethical values, entrepreneurs and to educate multicultural and qualified individuals.

Target of Department

To  be aware of Atatürk principles, have knowledge about Revolution History, speak Turkish efficiently, to use the fundamentals of physics and chemistry in the professional field and to learn English in advanced level, to have several responsibilities about the environmental, social and ethical problems about their profession and to pay attention to health and safety precautions about their works. To know the fundamentals of eye and human anatomy, to learn how to mount a frame, to choose and to apply the correct eye-glasses for refractive errors, to use the optical tools and optician package programs.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements are determined by OSYM according to regulations of Council of Higher Education. For information, please visit the Student Selection & Placement Centre (OSYM). Students are placed by Central Placement OSYM examination acccording to the YGS-1 score type results for the Optician Program.

Graduation Requirements

Students who successfully complete all compulsory courses specified in the course plan and the minimum number of elective courses required; complete 120 ECTS credits and have a minimum CGPA of 2.00/ 4.00 will graduate.

Degree to be Acquired

Undergraduate students who successfully complete the program are awarded with the title "health technician" under Fundamental Field Competencies coded 72,52 (health, engineering) within the frame of International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED). 

Transfer to Higher Level

Students are entitled to transfer to Physics (License field code: 3182), Optical and Acoustic Engineering (License field code: 9379),  Physics Engineering (License field code: 3184) undergraduate programs with DGS.

Employment Oppurtunities

Graduates of this programme are given the titles of "Optician" and "Health Technician (Opticianry Technician)". Opticians can be a responsible manager of an optical shop. Graduates can run their own optical shops with their Optician title, besides they can work as manager in opticianry businesses.

Assessment of Exams 

Examination, measurement and evaluation are made in accordance with Bartin University, "Associate and Bachelor of Education Examination Regulations" .

Gained Qualification and Its Level

Graduates are entitled to SHORT LEVEL associate's degree according to Qualifications Framework for the European Higher Education Area QF-EHEA, and 5th level associate's degree according to European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning,EQF-LLL. 

Qualification Requirements and Rules

The undergraduate students in this program must be successful in all of the courses with a minimum achievement grade of DD, must have completed at least 120 ECTS credits and have scored a minimum CGPA of 2.00/4.00. At the same time, the students must complete their compulsory internship within the designated period of time and within the scope of necessary qualifications.
